I was in New York this past week for a Yankees game. Afterwards, I had a chance to go into Manhattan. We stopped into a bar in midtown and ran into Mike Rowe. If you didn’t know, Mike is the host of The Discovery Channel’s “Dirty Jobs” and he often appears on Fox News.
At first, you see someone like Mike and he looks the part – like he was destined to become someone on television. He just decided one day he was going to be on TV and it happened overnight. Unless you have followed someone on their journey, it’s easy to assume they rolled right into this lifestyle and choice of career.
I mentioned, after introducing myself and talking to Mike, that I like to learn from others’ mistakes and how I was trying to speed up my trip to success. He made a comment, in reply to my mention of learning from mistakes, that hit me. He said, “…and we have made many.”
…and we have made many.”
Wow! I know everyone has a road that they must take to get to where they are going. But, I guess I never thought about looking back at someone famous to see what events took place. What obstacles did they have? How long did it take to get to where they were? What did they do wrong that may have set them back?
My point is, we should take a moment to examine successful people’s journeys. Don’t just assume they fell into their fate.
Everyone has their journey. It is filled with lessons that they used to get to where they are. If you are fortunate enough to run into one of them, instead of trying to get a selfie or an autograph, why not ask them about their journey? Find out their story and what they’re made of. You may find that it isn’t what you initially thought.
